Which dance is right for me?

Questions for people who do not dance yet: they show which style suits them and where to start. In a short and a detailed version.

In short
  • The Dance finder recommends three dance styles. There are two ways in: the quick test is ten questions, the detailed one forty-six — and you can skip any question.
  • Every recommendation says which of your answers led there.
  • To see the result you give your name and e-mail address — or sign in — and we also send the full result by e-mail.

What is it for?

If you have never danced, an event list does not help much: you cannot tell whether to go to a salsa or a bachata class, because you have tried neither. The Dance finder helps exactly there — it asks about you, not about dancing.

You choose at the start: the Quick test is ten questions, about a minute; the Detailed test is forty-six, five to six minutes, and gives a sharper answer in return. If two dances end up neck and neck in the detailed test, you get a few extra questions at the end that separate exactly those two. From the tenth question on you can stop any time with That is enough, show my result — you still get a result from the answers you gave. Before showing the result we ask for your name and e-mail address so we can send it to you; if you are signed in, we skip that step.

What does it ask?

Things you can answer without knowing anything about dance:

  • whether you would dance with a partner or on your own;
  • how close your partner may be while you dance;
  • what tempo of music you would rather dance to;
  • why you would start — for exercise, for company, or to perform;
  • and finally: where you are looking for classes.

Every question has a No preference button. It does not spoil the result: a skipped question simply does not count. Answer three and you get just as accurate a match on those three as someone who answered all of them.

The first question of the Dance finder — with a partner or on your own — with its two answers below.
Every question has a “No preference” option; a skipped question does not spoil the result.

What do you get?

A winning style with a percentage, a short description, and two or three sentences about why you got it. Those sentences refer to your own answers — if you never asked for a close hold, no such reason appears.

Beginner classes sit under the winner. If there are none in your city right now, we say so and show results from across the country — the list never pretends the classes are nearby.

Below that come the runners-up, each linking to its own class list.

The form before the result: name and e-mail fields, the terms of submitting, and the social sign-in buttons below.
This is all we ask before the result. If you have an account and sign in, this step is skipped.

Share it, or start over any time

Your result is in the address bar, so the link can be sent on: whoever opens it sees exactly the same thing (they also give their name and address, or sign in). We do not store your answers — those travel in the link, not with us; your name and e-mail address stay on our newsletter list until you unsubscribe.

The Start over button lets you take it again differently.

You can come on your own

Most beginner partner classes rotate partners, so you do not need to bring anyone. That is why the “who would you go with” question only nudges the result: your answer counts, but it does not rule out partner dances.
